This page is about my long-time hobby of amateur (ham) radio. This is an older picture of my shack, circa 2005:

The intent is to run SO2R for contests. The left station is the one used most of the time.

When I was 10 years old, my sister Marilyn invited her college room-mate to spend a weekend with us on our farm. Dot came withher boyfriend Bruce. Bruce seemed nice enough, but his car had some weird license plate (WA3LMY) and he read some magazine with a really odd title (QST). I had always been interested in how radios worked, but couldn't figure it out. Once Bruce told me about ham radio, I was hooked! That weekend happened to be the local farm fair, and a (now defunct) radio club had a booth offering classes, so Bruce picked up a flyer. My mother didn't think I'd really be able to learn the Morse code and pass an FCC test, but agreed to let me try. My license arrived when I was 11, and I've been on the air ever since.

What happened to all the characters mentioned in the story above? Dot and Bruce have been married since the 70s, Bruce has the call AA5B, their youngest daughter is KC5KED, we visit with each other quite often, and my sister still jokes me about stealing her friends!

So how do I spend my on-air time?. Recently, I've been spending a lot of time in pursuit of a 5BWAS. Much time is spent on the 3905 Century Club nets as well as the Triple-H net (#772) and OMISS nets (#4170). I have envelopes on file with the KB5IPQ, WN7M and OMISS QSL bureaus, so feel free to QSL via them or direct. No SASE is ever needed... I'm more than happy to spend 43 cents to help someone with an award! I just got a 6 meter beam on top of the tower, so a WAS on that band seems pretty tempting.

Current calls that I control: K2UT (me!), NJ2NJ (packet club) and W2SEE (ATV club).

Previous callsigns: WN2UEA (1974), WN2ZZX (1974-1976), WA2ZZX (1976-1996), N2TA (1996).

Current clubs: Frankford Radio Club (GO FRC!), South Jersey Radio Association, NJ QRP Club, a life member of ARRL, etc.

Currently (April 2008), my station consists of:

  • FT-1000 Field
  • Two Kenwood TS-850s
  • FT-847 (6 meters)
  • Various 2 meter and 440 FM rigs
  • Amp Supply LK-550 amplifier
  • Elevated 75/160 wire vertical
  • Elevated 40 meter wire vertical
  • Force-12 C3S on top of a US Tower TX-472
  • Cushcraft 3 element 6 meter beam on top of the C3S

The rigs cycle around; the 850s are currently in need of repair. Too many hours contesting with them at N2MM's place, HI! They really are nice rigs, but the 1000 is a lot of fun too.
